آموزش زبان انگلیسی دبیرستان - E-mail interview with Zeinab Sahouli

With teachersAs a teacher, what do you think about the word “teaching “and “teaching a foreign language, Like English “in our public schools?

Ms Sahouli: "Foreign language courses" in our public schools are just the courses to be passed and not to be learned because our educational system isn't well-planned.

With teachers: Could you please tell us about the problems facing English teachers and their students in public schools; middle and high Schools? Where are we going? I mean in teaching English in public schools? What are your solutions to improve the method of learning and teaching English in public schools?

Ms Sahouli: The most important problem is the books.

There is no audio device such as a Native Speaker (Audio Cassette) In middle and high schools. The books have not clear pictures. And there are not good flashcards. I think the books must be changed or the class times must be increased to teach another book. Or students must attend English institutes.

With teachers: What’s your opinion about English course books ( text books ) in our public schools?

Ms Sahouli: As I mentioned in the earlier question our books have lots of problems. The books emphasis on grammar and there is not enough conversations in our books and the new words and readings aren't related to each other most of time.

With teachers: If you could design the ideal classroom for students in your school ( i.e. grade one ) what would it look like?

Ms Sahouli:  I try to have a cooperative method.

With teachers: Tell us about your approach to Cooperative Learning. Do you use this strategy? If so, How would you include cooperative learning in your classroom? Can you give an example, please?

Ms Sahouli: Yes. I will divide the class to 5 groups and 4 members. ( i.e.20 students in the class) and suppose while teaching reading, at first I let students read it first and then ask them some questions and they can think about it together and answer some questions and then I teach . After teaching, the students can speak out on the lesson.

With teachers: What techniques do you use to keep students actively involved during a lesson? How do you deal with the unmotivated students?

Ms Sahouli : Question and answer. I make them involved in the class by asking some easy questions and encourage them to answer.

With teachers: How do you feel about using technology in an English classroom? Is it Important to you?

Ms Sahouli: Yes. It's important in my opinion but our schools don't have enough technology and also we don't have enough time to use it.

With teachers: Now we are at the end of the year of school, how will you find out whether or not you were successful? What methods have you used or would you use to assess student learning?

Ms Sahouli: I try to find out it during the year and while teaching. And at the end of the year I can understand it by final and oral exam. I have used mixture methods according to the classes' levels.

With teachers: How would your students describe you and your teaching strategies? ( in six words )

Ms Sahouli: serious, Stringent, having good pronunciation, being on time

With teachers: Thank you very much for being with us.

Ms Sahouli: Thank you too.
