![]() The world only needs 30 billion dollars a year to eradicate the
scourge of hunger
Time for talk over - Action needed
3 June 2008, Rome - Noting that the time for talk was over and that action was urgently needed, FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf today appealed to world leaders for US$30 billion a year to re-launch agriculture and avert future threats of conflicts over food
In an impassioned speech at the opening of the Rome Summit called to de-fuse the current world food crisis, Dr Diouf noted that in 2006 the world spent US$1 200 billion on arms while food wasted in a single country could cost US$100 billion and excess consumption by the world’s obese amounted to US$20 billion “Against that backdrop, how can we explain to people of good sense and good faith that it was not possible to find US$30 billion a year to enable 862 million hungry people to enjoy the most fundamental of human rights: the right to food and thus the right to life?” Dr Diouf asked “It is resources of this order of magnitude that would make it possible definitely to lay to rest the specter of conflicts over food that are looming on the horizon,” he added

Days of the weekThe meanings behind the names of the seven days of the week. The days of the week are named after ancient gods. Each is explained in detail belowMonday: The name Monday comes from the Old English Monandæg, meaning "day of the MoonTuesday: Tuesday comes from the Old English Tiwesdæg, meaning "Tyr's day." Tyr was the Norse god of combat. In countries that didn't have a norse influence it is the "Day of Mars" (the Roman war god); In French this translates as mardi and in Spanish martes Wednesday: This name comes from the Old English Wodnesdæg meaning the day of the Woden or Odin, the father of the Gods. It is based on Latin dies Mercurii, "Day of Mercury";in French mercredi and Spanish miércoles. The germans have renamed this day as Mittwoch, which simply means middle of the week Thursday: comes from the Old English Þunresdæg, or Thor's day. Thor was the Germanic and Norse god of thunder. In Germany the same route leads to Donnerstag. Donner can be directly translated as thunder In latin countries Thursday was the "Day of Jupiter"; which becomes the French jeudi and Spanish jueves Friday: The name Friday celebrates the Norse goddess of beauty Frigg, In Latin the "Day of Venus" (also the goddess of beauty); leads to vendredi and Spanish viernes Saturday: Saturday is the only English day of the week to retain its Roman origin. Saturday "Day of Saturn"; In southern Europe the catholic church remembers the jewish sabbath in the names (French samedi and Spanish sábado) Sunday: The name is quite literally the Sun's Day. Attempts by the church to replace this remenant of pagan worship with 'The Lords Day' failed in northern europe but succeeded in southern europe where Dimanche (french) and Domingo (spanish) have their routes in the Latin dies Dominica Source: education.newarchaeology |

How to Hear English Everywhere
Two simple definitions to hear: to receive sound with the ears to listen: to try to hear You are very good at languages. That's obvious, because you already speak one language very well - your own! And if you can learn and speak one language well, then you can certainly learn and speak one or more other languages But did you ever ask yourself: "How did I learn my own language?" In fact, you never really "learned" it at all - you just started speaking it. One day, when you were about two or three years old, you started speaking your language. A few words at first, not full sentences. But you spoke. And very soon you made progress without even thinking about it. It was like magic But it wasn't magic. It was the result of hearing. For two to three years before you spoke, you heard people speaking your language all day, and maybe all night. You heard people speaking your language. Maybe you listened to people, but more importantly you heard. them. Then, as if by magic, you started to speak. All that hearing was necessary for you to start speaking. For two to three years words went IN to your head. Then words came OUT of your head! That is why hearing (and listening to) English as much as possible is so important to you now. The more English you put in, the more you'll get out So how can you hear a lot of English when you're not in an English-speaking country or family? Fortunately, there are many ways of hearing English in almost all countries of the world |

“Phil Discovers Self-Esteem"
Phil didn’t like to talk about living on the farm at school as he thought others would look down on him since many of them lived in the city and wore fancy clothes, unlike his hand-me-downs Phil dreamed: “If only I could live in the city and be like the others, I would be accepted.” You see, he didn’t feel any pride in who he was or that he was special One day, the school announced they would be having a talent show and that the prize would be fifty dollars. Boy, Phil thought: “I sure would love to win that money. Then I could buy some new clothes and be popular too That night, Phil told his father about the talent show and that he wished he had something to contribute so he could be like the other boys. His father said, “Son, don’t always keep chasing someone else’s rainbow when you have your own to discover. When you believe in yourself, your rainbow will shine and others will notice you Phil gave his father’s words a lot of thought and decided to enter the talent show. As he was singing and playing his guitar, he realized it wasn’t about being like the others or just about winning the money. He was having fun sharing who he was and finding his own rainbow |

About the Author
Hans Christian Andersen was born in the slums of Odense. His father was a shoemaker and literate. His mother, who worked as washerwoman, was uneducated and superstitious, but opened for his son the world of folklore. Andersen's half-sister worked as a prostitute for a time. Andersen received little education, and as a child he was highly emotional, suffering all kinds of fears and humiliations because of his tallness and effeminate interests. Andersen's hysterical attacks of cramps were falsely diagnosed as epileptic fits. Encouraged by his mother he composed his own fairy tales and arrange puppet theatre shows

The pupil gave his examination بگو: The pupil took his examination He never gives attention to me بگو : He never pays attention to me ( وی هرگز به من توجه نمی کند. ) To be busy نه To have work ( کار داشتن - مشغول بودن ) مگو: I have much work this morning بگو : I am very busy this morning ( من امروز صبح بسیار کار دارم. "بسیار مشغولم" ) اما می توانیم بگوییم: I have a lot of work to do this morning Go on foot نه Go with the foot ( پیاده رفتن ) مگو: Shall we go there with the foot بگو : Shall we go there on foot ( آیا پیاده به آن جا خواهیم رفت ؟ ) Make a mistake نه Do a mistake ( اشتباه کردن - غلط داشتن در ) مگو: I did one mistake in dictation بگو : I made one mistake in dictation ( من در دیکته یک غلط داشتم. ) |
